Any Caribbean cooking worth its salt(fish) should have the effect of transporting you to a desert island, and Savannah Jerk manages the feat with ease. If you’re looking for a huge plate of spicy comfort food containing ingredients such as green banana, boiled yam, dumpling and sweet potato, and dishes such as macaroni pie, rich flavoursome mutton curry served with rice and peas, or stewed chicken turned a dark, chocolatey brown from caramelised sugar, this is the place to head.
The short menu covers all the classics of everyday Caribbean cuisine: jerk chicken, oxtail, ackee and saltfish, stewed chicken, and Trinidad roti (a choice of meat, chicken and prawn curries with diced potatoes wrapped in soft flatbread). Drinks are authentic too; Guinness punch, Ting (fizzy grapefruit juice), ginger beer (great with jerk chicken) and the ubiquitous Red Stripe all feature alongside a long list of rums.
Despite the restaurant’s spacious, smart dining room, this isn’t fancy stuff, just Caribbean cooking that flavours hearty ingredients with hints of scotch bonnet, ginger and allspice, bringing a big smile to your face and a ‘mmmm’ to your heart.
