Trendy baker Serena Whitefield makes cakes for Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, so there was no doubt her debut café would be a pretty little thing. It’s swanky-meets-playful, with its monochromatic statement wall and sparkling white interiors. The clean look fits well with the venue’s healthy-eating agenda. All cakes tick the gluten-free box, made with ground almonds instead of flour. The better half (known as ‘the pearls’) are dairy-free and sugar-free. But, honestly, your sweet tooth won’t know the difference.
A scrumptious raspberry and almond loaf (£3) made with honey is just as divine as a ‘groove’ like the salted caramel, with its sugary wodge of icing topped with a chunk of Snickers bar. But they’re both a little greasy, a typical problem with GF cakes. For this, a rich matcha latte (£3.50) comes to the rescue, though a pot of Earl Grey (£3.95) is just as refreshing.
If you’re looking to eat cake and chill, there’s only one communal table flanked with mags and newspapers, and the vibe is more fashion studio than lounge. Still, it’s worth swinging by for a quick sweet fix that comes without the guilt trip.
