There's a firm Latin American slant to this attractive looking Southwark restaurant and bar, with flavours and feel combining Colombia, Ecuador, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and beyond. Its name translates (loosely) as 'palate' in Spanish, but is also what the Cubans call their fiercely authentic, family-run restaurants (fun fact: the term was coined from a Brazilian sitcom popular in Cuba in the early ’90s).
The menu here is a collection of small plates, ranging from green plantain crisps with taquero guacamole and empanadas filled with slow-cooked beef brisket to tuna tartare and quinoa tian with taro crisp and chipotle mayonnaise, grilled chicken skewers with Peruvian yellow chilli sauce, and grilled sirloin steak with corn bread and chimichurri.
The drinks list sounds interesting, too. Expect a wine selection (unsurprisingly) slanted toward Argentina and Chile, complemented by bottles from Brazil, Uruguay and Peru. Mezcal, pisco, cachaça, tequila and rum dominate a great-looking cocktail and spirits list.
