Having started from humble beginnings in Brixton, Honest Burgers now boasts 15 branches in London. This Bank branch – which is split over two floors, with a bar upstairs and more seating downstairs – is only open on weekdays, with a live DJ on Thursdays. But it still keeps everything we know and love about the chain intact, from the simple flowchart menu to the white and blue enamel tableware.
Despite its rapid expansion, Honest Burgers seems to have stuck to its original ethos: ‘to do one thing, and do it well’. And, boy, do they do burgers well. The classic ‘Honest’ burger didn’t disappoint, with a juicy Ginger Pig patty, crispy bacon, melted cheddar cheese and their signature sticky red onion relish. But if you like to pick and choose your toppings, the staff are pretty accommodating, especially when it comes to how you want your meat done. Someone at the next table asked for her burger to come ‘as rare as you can legally do it’, and they barely batted an eyelid. And let’s not forget those moreish rosemary-salted chips, which you can now dunk in a new beef-and-bacon gravy, which is a far cry from the gloopy substance you’d get at your local chippy.
With branches popping up all over town, it might not be so hard to get a table at HB these days, but this is still seriously good fast food. Honest.
