Lordship Lane is East Dulwich’s dining and drinking destination and Hisar is an established fixture. There’s a takeaway to one side as well as a substantial, brown-toned restaurant. Here, a large ocakbası holds pride of place, wafting fragrant smoke and sending forth an endless stream of kebabs (billed as ‘Bar-B-Que Pit Specials’), as well as assorted grilled fish dishes. There's a large range of starters both hot and cold, preparation for one of the grilled offerings (which include steaks as well as the usual skewers and chops) or one of their numerous casserole dishes. Alti ezmeli (chunks of grilled lamb served in a tomato sauce with red and green peppers and herb butter) is a rich, satisfying. Islik kebab is tender-stewed lamb wrapped in a parcel of soft aubergine and cooked in a fragrant sauce. There are vegetarian dishes too, and very reasonably priced side dishes, but most people come here (and Hisar is highly popular) for the family-friendly atmosphere, the hearty portions, reasonable prices and grilled meats galore.
There is also a lunch special consisting of 2 courses for £8.95, 7 days a week.
