Once home to a genuine local boozer, this site was taken over in 2011 and swiftly given a makeover aligning it a little better with its more salubrious neighbours: mostly pastel-coloured cottages and Victorian townhouses.
They did a good job with a fairly sizeable space, retaining the finer features (dimpled glass windows, a U-shaped mahogany bar) while adding other decorative touches (big rugs, antlers adorned with fedoras and scarves, candlelit tables unencumbered by tablecloths, Punch magazine wallpaper in a separate snug).
It's proper gastropub fare on the food menu – think roast duck breast with potato gratin, hispi cabbage and red wine jus, baked trout with roast fennel, rocket and a lemon oil dressing, or burgers made with wagyu beef. Craft beer is available on draught.
