Please note, Gelateria Danieli has now closed. Time Out Food editors, May 2018.
This small branch of the mini-chain, the first West End venture for Gelateria Danieli, opened in 2012. Despite the name, it isn’t much of a café but rather a takeaway shop with one small table inside – though on a sunny day, you’ll find a few more bistro tables on the pavement outside.
On our visit, 18 flavours were offered, yet none of the more original ices served at the Richmond outlet (the likes of cinnamon, caramel and date, or mulberry) was available. Instead, the choice was from Italian classics such as coffee, stracciatella or pistachio. Though disappointing, this was probably a good thing as a sign warns, ‘Only one taster’: not much help if you aren’t sure what you might get.
Danieli’s strength is in the creaminess of its ice-cream; even the sorbets are creamy (and mostly dairy based). Our highlights were a perfectly balanced rum and raisin and a silky tiramisu featuring delectable chunks of coffee-soaked ladyfingers.
