Please note, Beyond Bread has now closed. Time Out Food editors, FEBRUARY 2020.
It's all about gluten-free bits and bobs at this bakery and café on Charlotte Place. The in-house bakery knocks out bread that doesn't rely on flour, with loaves of sourdough, pumpernickel, seeded loaf, brioche, ciabatta and baguettes lined up and looking appetising.
These provide the housing for a variety of sandwiches and toasties - all gluten-free, of course. Partial to a pun, options here range from a 'pig out' (pulled pork, lettuce and red cabbage slaw on a soft bun) and an 'off the hook' (tuna melt) to a 'miso horny' (free range eggs, white miso glaze and baby spinach in a baguette). A prosciutto, minted goat's cheese, fresh rocket and tomato chilli jam baguette is called 'for goat's sake'. Indeed.
Expect, too, options such as oat, walnut and raisin muffins, strawberry and custard Danishes and banana bread alongside red velvet cupcakes, strawberry jam cookies and a victoria sponge served with fresh strawberries. Coffee and tea is also available.
