This 6,000 acre forest is on the border of Essex, but London should definitely claim joint custody – it's a beautiful expanse of mature native trees with more than 100 lakes and ponds among them. Walking routes are signposted through the area and horse riding and cycling are both permitted. Four forest centres host regular events to help visitors of all ages enjoy the forest, and Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge gives more background into the area's history.
