The Dante Quartet plays Purcell arr Britten) Chacony in G minor; Britten's String Quartet No 2 in C, Op 36; Purcell's Fantasia upon one note; and Britten's String Quartet No 3, Op 94 ('La Serenissima'). (Note: at 6pm, a pre-concert talk with David Matthews and the Dante Quartet. In 1975 Britten invited composer David Matthews and his brother Colin to try out this String Quartet No 3, newly completed, on the piano at his home in Aldeburgh. That David became Britten's assistant, 1966–70, and also his biographer, forms the starting-point for a lively discussion of Britten's chamber music, with illustrations from the Dantes. St Pancras Room; £4.50.)
