If you spot a person wearing an odd-looking backpack with a camera attached at one of London’s tube stations this week, don’t be alarmed. It’s not a piece of performance art, or a CSM student’s experimental wardrobe, but the work of the Google Street View team as they capture pictures of the Underground.
From today (December 5), Londoners can now see Google Street View inside 18 stations across the tube, Elizabeth line and Network Rail stations – including Oxford Circus, London Bridge, Bank Tottenham Court Road. A further 18 stations are due to get street view before the end of the year.
Google spent the past year capturing 360-degree photos inside the stations across central London, using tech to automatically blur out people’s faces. The new pictures should help those who are are less confident travelling or have accessibility needs by allowing them to check out the layout of the station beforehand.
The deputy mayor for transport, Seb Dance, said: ‘I’m pleased that Google Street View has arrived at some of London’s busiest stations. Now, customers can plan their routes on the London Underground in the same way they would when walking and cycling, helping us to build a better, fairer London for all.’
Malcolm Pitt, Network Rail’s head of customer experience and accessibility, said: ‘Travelling on the rail network should be for everyone; we want to empower all passengers, including those with disabilities, to travel with greater autonomy.’
To see them yourself, simply search the station on Google Maps and then click on the Street View icon in the bottom right corner.
