With just seven weeks to go to Christmas, it might be an idea to start strategising how you’re going to tackle the festive season. But the build-up doesn’t all have to be present-finding pain and checkout calamities. With a trip to Winterville, it can also mean chugging a thick hot chocolate before another ill-advised go on the Crazy Mouse rollercoaster.

That’s right, the wonderland for Londoners who like a little extra rum on their Christmas pud is returning to Clapham Common armed with candy floss and strobe lights. Its open-air ice rink will be back in SW4, this time joined by new additions, like a secret tequila bar from Backyard Cinema. And with Street Feast’s food stands at the helm, the Winterville grub will be a welcome change from the dry turkey sandwiches and run-of-the-mill mulled wine. Even the biggest bah humbugs will be humming Slade by the time they reach the waltzers.

Three things to see and do at Winterville

Snuggle up at Backyard Cinema

Revisit a dithering Hugh Grant in ‘Love Actually’ or bring your vocal chords (or ear plugs) for a singalong showing of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in a winter movie maze.

Spend the night in the Spiegeltent

Mariah & Friendz will be bringing two drag extravaganzas to the ‘main event’ tent – a child-friendly performance of their variety show Splat, and an adult spectacle in the evening (December 9) – while The Cocoa Butter Club (November 25) will be serving up burlesque performance art set to Motown and soul. Did we mention Lucha Britannia’s Mexican wrestling match (December 6)?

Get a round in at Plonk Golf

Fan of swinging? Then get the par-tee started at Winterville’s nine-hole, UV-powered indoor golf course. See if you can handle the humps as you make your way around.
