Earlier this month Plates in Shoreditch became the first vegan restaurant in the UK to be awarded a Michelin star at the 2025 Michelin Guide ceremony.
One of the few fine-dining vegan restaurants in London, since opening last summer Plates has been one of the most in-demand tables in town – at time of writing, bookings are only open from July. I managed to finally visit last week, just after Michelin star status had been announced, to review Plates’ plant-based menu.
Is Plates as good as the Michelin inspectors think? Definitely. So good, in fact, that I gave it a hallowed five stars. ‘A long-awaited addition to London’s vegan landscape,’ is what I said, and I stand by it.
At eight courses and £75 a head, Plates not only offers one of the cheapest Michelin star tasting menus in town, but also one of the most innovative. Read the full review to catch me singing the praises of Plates’ menu, ‘which plays it safe while simultaneously playfully slapping you with coltish experimentation’.
Among the dishes I tried were wild garlic soup dotted with potato dumplings, and served with a sour apple and buckwheat truffle on the side; slow-cooked leeks with chestnut cream and jalapeno and gooseberry dressing; barbequed maitake mushrooms with black bean mole, kimchi, aioli and puffed rice; and black truffle and artichoke risotto with blood orange.
