The Wicked movie musical is out today. It’s going to be huge – getting into a screening this weekend without casting a spell of your own might be tricky – and for good reason.

Reviews as glowing, the hype is huge and Monday’s European premiere at London’s Royal Festival Hall broke all records for Thameside fabulousness.

Time Out was there on the green and pink carpet, canvassing the film’s starry ensemble for their own personal stage musical favourites.Obviously, excluding Wicked itself.

We got an array of fascinating and flamboyant choices – and in Jeff Goldblum’s case, a little sample of one of the actual musical numbers.

Here’s what the cast and crew chose.

Jeff Goldblum – My Fair Lady

If you want to catch Jeff Goldblum’s favourite musical, you’ll have to wait for its next revival. My Fair Lady last ran on the West End stage in 2022. That didn’t stop the American legend, the Wizard of Oz himself, giving us a short burst of ‘Wouldn't It Be Loverly’. ‘

John M Chu – Hamilton

Hamilton is really good here,’ the Wicked director tells us. ‘It’s always really good. I saw Miss Saigon here which was really good.’

Marissa Bode and choreographer Christopher Scott – Billy Elliot

Bode, who plays witch-in-the-making Nessarose Thropp, joined Wicked choreographer in bigging up West End classic Billy Elliot. The musical played in London between 2005 and 2016 in the Victoria Palace Theatre, which is now occupied by Hamilton. ‘

Bronwyn James – Cabaret

The choice of British actress, who plays Shiz student ShenShen in the movie, was also a pitch for a role. ‘You know what I’m so into right now – and I’m going to say it as many times as it takes to be in the bloody thing: Cabaret. It gives me the same emotional tingles as Wicked does, even though they’re very different.’

Ethan Slater – Cabaret

The actor, who plays Munchkin student Boq Woodsman, is another devotee of the Kander and Ebb classic. ‘I would love to play the Emcee at some point,’ he tells us.
