This west London tube station is getting a colourful revamp

An Edwardian tube station in west London is going to be painted with the colours of the District line. 

The 120-year-old Baron’s Court tube station in Hammersmith is currently in a state of disrepair, with a rotten canopy, cracked glazing on its staircase, and rust and water damage to its columns. The Grade II-listed building could certainly do with a makeover.

Thankfully, it won’t be long before the old girl is restored to her former beauty. The station will get a range of repair works and a fresh lick of paint to match the colours of the District line. She’ll be looking young again in no time. Kind of like botox, but for tube stations. 

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has given TfL the green light to fix up Barons Court station, with the works scheduled to take place towards the end of 2025.

TfL suggested four refurbishments, including replacing the timber elements of its canopy, strengthening its columns, repainting the station in the District line’s dark green, and general repair and refurbishments.

In the application, TfL wrote: ‘The current colour scheme is not thought to be original and changing this would have no effect on the significance of the building. Rather it would enhance the station and be a more authentic and appropriate colour scheme for a District line station.’

The exact dates for the work, including tube station closures, will be revealed at a later date. 

Baron’s Court isn’t the only tube stop that’s glowing up. This historic train station is also getting a refurb. And in other travel news, the night tube could be getting a more frequent service. Plus, Crossrail 2 just got one step closer to being built.
