Here at Time Out, we know a thing or two about cool places to live. Every year we publish a list of the hottest places to live in the entire world, and one London ’hood pretty much always makes the cut. In the most recent edition of Time Out’s Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World, we crowned east London’s Leyton one of the planet’s most happening areas.
If you’re looking for a second opinion, we’ve just the thing. The Sunday Times has just published its latest ranking of the UK’s ‘coolest’ postcodes to move to. The newspaper’s list totals 11 postcodes, ranging from suburbs of Leeds ‘for cool Dads’ to foodie havens in Gloucestershire – and one London area features.
Described as ‘the most desirable postcode south of the river’ and ‘the city’s best kept secret’ is Penge, specifically SE20 (which is actually quite a bit bigger than Penge itself).
Writing about Penge and SE10, Sunday Times writer Hannah Evans shouts out stuff like the Chatsworth Bakehouse (and its equally-famous queues), Penge Rooftop Gallery, Penge Cycle Club and craft beer by Southey Brewing Co.
Last year another London area renowned for its bakeries and green spaces was named among the UK’s ‘coolest’ postcodes by the Times. In the publication’s 2024 list, Newington Green in north London featured.
You can find the Sunday Times’ full 2025 ‘coolest postcodes’ list (behind a paywall) here.
