London’s train stations tend to get a bad rap. Half of the UK’s worst train stations for cancellations are here in the capital, Euston station, despite small improvements, remains miserable and Londoners are officially Britain’s glummest commuters. But there seems to be one station that’s managed to rise above it all to be crowned one of the best, not just in the country, but the whole of Europe.
London Bridge Station has been ranked tenth in the European Railway Station Index. It earned an overall score of 85 out of a maximum score of 118 for passenger experience.
To qualify for the index, stations have to have had at least 30 million passengers in the past 12 month. It rates stations across the continent based on a number of factors, including passenger volume, ticket office operating hours, waiting times, delayed services, wheelchair accessibility and their offering of shops and restaurants.
Each category has a different points system. London Bridge scored 10 points for its waiting times (five minutes or less) but just five points in the delayed trains category. It did the best in the restaurants and takeaways category, scoring the maximum 15 points.
Looking beyond the top ten, six more London stations made it into the top 50: St Pancras at 17, Liverpool Street at 20, Victoria at 22, Paddington at 24, Euston in 25th place and Waterloo in 30th. You can see the European Railway Index top 10 here.
