This year, Smithfield Market turns the grand old age of 150. And, like anyone celebrating a centenary-and-a-half, it’s having a massive bash.
Smithfield 150 will take place in the market and its surrounding areas on August 25 and 26. Encompassing six festival zones, 200 performers and expecting more than 30,000 punters, it’s a family-friendly extravaganza put on by the Museum of London and designed to highlight the new ‘Culture Mile’ initiative to turn the north-west corner of the City into a vibrant cultural hub.
Across two days, you’ll be able to hear live music from experimental psych-pop trio Stealing Sheep, get involved with women’s music project Girls Rock London, and have a bop to the party sounds of Disco Loco.
Not quite old enough for that kind of thing? Well, there’s a hula-hooping workshop, puppetry, kids’ comedy and more for the little ones. And for big’uns who also want a break, there’ll be mocktail-making classes and free manicures from WAH Nails. Plus there’ll be drinks, street food and all the usual.
‘London’s biggest birthday bash’ is sure to be a huge and joyous celebration of the city. After all, you only turn 150 once, eh?
