Soon, getting to brunch dates at Brickwood and nights out at Infernos (if you can brave the questionably crusted carpets) could become a lot easier. There’s been a key development in the potential extension of the Northern line to Clapham Junction station, as Wandsworth Council has announced there are ‘no engineering or geological constraints’ preventing the extension.

When Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station tube stations opened on the Northern line in 2021, TfL said it designed the stations in a way that would allow for a further extension to Clapham Junction in the future. At the time, it didn’t have any plans to do so. But that could be about to change.

First proposed in February 2023, the southwest London council has been considering extending the line for a while now. Now, Wandsworth is carrying out a public consultation to see whether there is strong local support for the extension.

Councillor Jenny Yates said: ‘We completed a feasibility study into extending the Northern line to Clapham Junction, and the findings will factor into any long-term plans for the area.

‘We want to hear the views of all the people who live, work or visit this part of the borough so that any future plans reflect local community needs and contribute to growth.’

The funding however remains up in the air, and there’s already a lot going on with Clapham Junction, which is one of the UK’s busiest stations with an average of 118,000 passengers passing through every day. The not-so-glam travel hub is already set to get a huge £35 million transformation designed to ease congestion – part of the Clapham Junction Masterplan.

Pubs in this north London borough could soon stay open later

Kingston’s bus station has had a very swanky makeover.
