The Millennium Bridge is beloved by many. If you stand at the south end you get one of the best views in London; St Paul’s Cathedral, framed by the bridge’s distinctly early Noughties steel and concrete design. The bridge, that started wobbling after it opened, is going to undergo a massive renovation in the next few months.

Don’t worry, because the wobble isn’t back. The 25-year-old bridge is simply going to get some needed TLC, including resurfacing the crossing’s aluminium deck to make it less slippery, repainting the steelwork, and re-tensioning the suspension cables. It’s not yet known if the bridge will be closed while it undergoes works.

A City Bridge Foundation spokesperson said: ‘Millennium Bridge marks its 25th birthday this year and with thousands of people walking over it every day, that inevitably takes its toll.

‘The aluminium bridge deck is beginning to become worn, meaning it is now smoother and more slippery than it used to be, so we need to act now to ensure the bridge remains safe for people to use.’

The City Bridge Foundation, which looks after the bridge, is expected to award the £3.5 million contract to a contractor soon, with the contract likely to begin on February 10. The date of beginning of the works, or how long they will last, hasn’t been confirmed. We’ll update you when there is more information.
