TfL has been teasing Londoners about a possible DLR extension for yonks, with transport bosses saying the line could go to Thamesmead, one of London’s worst connected areas. But there’s been an exciting new development: the DLR could be lengthened even further than originally planned. Sadiq Khan has said he would like the line to run all the way to Belvedere in southeast London.
During the Mayor’s Question Time on May 23, Sadiq Khan said he wanted to address the scarcity of TfL services in southeast London.
Thomas Turrell, the new Conservative London Assembly Member representing Bexley and Bromley asked the mayor if he would consider extending the DLR to Belvedere. Turrell requested a meeting with either Khan or Seb Dance, deputy mayor for transport, to discuss it further.
Sadiq Khan responded: ‘I'm more than happy to arrange for the deputy mayor to meet with you and the leader of the council as well. You'll be aware of the difference it could make to your community. I'm also well aware of the paucity of TfL services currently to your borough. So I'm really keen to do whatever we can to assist.’
Currently, the DLR is planned to reach Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside, which would mean building a new tunnel under the river Thames. A public consultation for the project closed in March and officials are now reviewing contributions.
