Having a beloved local boozer has many appealing points: 1. Everybody knows your name. 2. And they’re always glad you came, and so on. But there’s no better asset for your favourite pub to have than an equally well-loved pet.

At The Pride of Spitalfields, just off Brick Lane, the furry friend was called Lenny and he was probably the most popular cat in east London. Spending his days on top of the bar or cosying up to customers, he had his own nickname (The Governor), his own hashtag (#LennyThePubCat) and – essentially – his own fanclub.

So it’s with damp whiskers that we report that, after a very strong run of 19 years, Lenny has passed away. Let’s raise a glass of milk to Spitalfields’ favourite feline: Lenny you’ll be missed, and may you always find a warm bar stool up in cat heaven.
