We might not have had a white Christmas, but what about a white January? The year is getting off to a frosty start, as the capital is forecast to have three days of snow this weekend and the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning.

The yellow warning, meaning a risk of snow, is in place from midday on Saturday (January 4) until 9am on Monday (January 6) and covers all regions of England other than the South West, the majority of Wales and parts of southern Scotland. The amount of snow expected for London isn’t confirmed, but about 5cm of snow is expected across the Midlands, Wales and northern England. The most amount of snow is expected in Wales and the Pennines, with up to 20-30cm forecast. You can find out more about the UK-wide forecast, including worst-affected areas and weather warnings, here.

Londoners can also expect to freeze as temperatures are predicted to drop, with lows of 4C during the day and -2C at night forecast.

The last time a Met Office weather station reported snow on the ground in London was December 12, 2022 when Northolt in west London had 1cm.

Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: ‘At the moment we’ve issued a very large snow warning for Saturday until Monday but it doesn’t mean that everywhere within that warning could see snow, it’s just a heads-up there could be some impacts.

‘It’s definitely going to start off as snow in many places but it’s a question of how quickly that snow melts and turns back to rain, it’s more likely that the snow won’t last that long in southern England.’
