It looks like Greggs is on the brink of out-Greggsing itself with plans for a massive new bakery slap bang in the middle of London.
Taking up some prime real estate in Leicester Square, it looks like the high street fave is going BIG after submitting plans for a 145 sq metre bakery to Westminster City Council earlier this year. An eagle-eyed Twitter user has shared the news of the build and its been reported that the development is going to cost a whopping £2mil and should be open by February 2022 – which isn’t really that long to wait to get your hands on an extremely central London vegan sausage roll.
The building was previously home to Turkish bakery Simit Sarayi as well as late 1990s nightclub Home, so if you find yourself yearning to dance about to a Paul Oakenfold set while you’re browsing the steak bakes, that’s why.
In other Greggs news, there have been reports of vegan sausage roll stocks running dry due to Brexit-related supply issues regarding the Quorn-like substance that provides their filling. The chain have said that ‘temporary interruptions’ look set to impact sales of the rolls, with branches in Twickenham, Richmond and Earls Court finding themselves out of vegan sausage rolls during the first half of this week.
‘Some shops may not have them or may not have them throughout the day. It varies,’ said a spokesperson for Greggs to news agency Reuters. Don’t mind us, we’ll just be weeping into our lunchboxes.
