Deptford High Street could soon become a no-car zone according to new plans revealed by Lewisham Council.
The high street is currently closed to traffic three days a week so markets can be held, but proposals would see parts of the shopping area closed off during certain hours seven days a week. The road between New Cross Road and Hamilton Street will be fully pedestrianised for set hours, with new seating, greenery, and better waste management all part of the designs.
The council carried out surveys of shoppers last year, which revealed that 93 per cent of visitors walked, cycled and or used public transport to get to the high street. It's also been engaging with local business owners, market traders and community groups to draft the plans, which are now open to public consultation until May 14.
The changes are expected to attract more shoppers to the area, as well as improving safety and cleanliness.
Deputy Mayor Louise Krupski, Lewisham Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Climate Action said: ‘As we look to the future of town centres, we want to work with the community at every stage to make sure our improvements are designed by and for local people while ensuring no one is left behind.
‘With over 60 percent of Lewisham residents using public transport for commuting, and many walking or cycling as part of their daily routines, we're focusing on making it easier for them to travel actively, safely and sustainably while also creating more space for people to enjoy what the high street has to offer.’
