For all you Francis Bourgeois wannabes out there, you’re going to want a sneak peek at this. New images showing HS2’s Euston station have been released – and, boy, does it look exciting.
In case you’re not up to speed on your rail-infrastructural knowledge, HS2 is a new high-speed railway project aiming to make Britain’s transport network more connected, more reliable and more speedy. The last time images of the Euston station project were released was in 2015, and things are looking pretty different now.
The new renderings show a 300-metre long station hall connecting to the local streets as well as a dramatic geometric roof design in either a bronze or gold colour. The design and high roof will help to maximise natural light and ventilation in what will be the largest station concourse in the UK.
Platforms-wise, it was announced in October last year that the number of HS2 platforms at Euston will be reduced from 11 to ten to help cut costs and improve efficiency. However, there will still be a peak of 17 trains an hour serving the station.
The north London HS2 terminus also promises to incorporate new connections to the current Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Underground lines serving Euston Square station, as well as the existing Northern and Victoria lines at Euston. Forget scrambling around King’s Cross to find your tube!
While this is all very exciting, London still has a long time to wait – and probably a lot of construction work to put up with. Phase one trains are due to serve at the new London Euston HS2 station between 2029 and 2033, so don’t hold your breath.
