Living in London can be pretty stressful – there’s traffic, crime and not to mention all the reckless Lime bike riders. So it’s no surprise that Londoners love a good spa.
One of the city’s oldest and most affordable spas , York Hall in Bethnal Green, has been closed for the past year for some serious upgrades. But we are pleased to report that this month it will officially re-open. See you in the steam room.
The council-run spa is able to keep its prices low as it doesn’t operate for profit. A two-hour stint in the thermal spa costs £32, where customers can make use of the traditional sauna, hammam, plunge pools, aroma steam rooms and a newly introduced infrared sauna. It also offers concessions for public sector workers, pensioners, disabled people, benefit recipients, students and juniors.

One of London’s oldest surviving Turkish baths, York Hall was opened by the Duke and Duchess of York in 1929. The renovation has turned London’s oldest spa (alongside Porchester Spa, which opened the same year) into a modern thermal spa, while retaining the traditional Turkish hammam. The revamp has also maintained the original blend of the traditional Turkish bath-house aesthetic, including intricate tilework and arches, with the building's distinctive Art Deco design.
The Porchester Spa also recently received a big upgrade, re-opening to the public in February 2025.
York Hall officially re-opens on Thursday, April 3.
