When Kentish Town tube station closed back in June 2023, locals were initially told that the Northern line stop would only be shut for a year. TfL then delayed its opening to September 2024, then delayed the reopening again to the end of the year. But now, finally, Kentish Town has a confirmed reopening date.

Mark your calendars, Kentish Towners: your local London Underground stop will officially reopen on December 20. Get in! No more traipsing up to Tufnell Park or down to Camden to hop on the tube.

Kentish Town’s tube station closed so that TfL could replace its two escalators. The reopening was pushed back after TfL found that the station was far worse for wear than expected – a major rebuild was required to restore the entrance hall. Kentish Town rail station, served by Thameslink, has remained open.

When it reopens, the stop won’t just boast new escalators. It’ll also have more ticket gates, improved signage and new tiling – all of which TfL says will ‘future-proof’ the station. The new escalators are expected to last at least 40 years.

Time Out London in Kentish Town

Kentish Town’s tube station has been shut for so long that in the time it’s been closed this writer moved into Kentish Town, spent a year trekking to Tufnell Park, and moved out again. Just my luck.

Still, Kentish Town is one of London’s finest neighbourhoods, boasting plenty of excellent restaurants, several top-tier pubs (including the Rose and Crown, one of Time Out’s 50 best pubs for 2024) and the legendary Forum.
