It’s easy to pooh-pooh posh towns. For most of us, places full of mansions and yummy mummies can seem pretentious and show-offish but, let’s admit it, they are very pretty and make for great mini-breaks.
Posh towns get all the good stuff – artisan bakeries, swanky restaurants, gorgeous green spaces, swish art galleries and cultural events. It’s no wonder people pay extortionate amounts of money to set up homes there. But you don’t have to live in swanky place full-time to get the best of it. The Telegraph has compiled a ranking of the best towns in Britain for when you fancy a short stay somewhere a bit more la-di-da.
Of course, there are plenty of places in London itself where you can get a feel for how the other half live, but according to the paper, the country’s poshest town is just an hour’s train away from the city.
The Telegraph named Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire the poshest place in the UK. It said: ‘A town best known for its Royal Regatta is surely the definition of posh.
‘Many A-listers live hereabouts; £140 million Park Place, one of Britain’s most expensive homes, is nearby. No surprise: it’s an idyllic spot, all weeping willows, alfresco Pimm’s, swaying bunting and swooshing rowers.’
It recommends indie deli slash cookery school Pavilion, the family-run restaurant Golden Ball and upmarket teddy bear shop Asquiths.
If you’d rather stay in the capital, at the end of last year, the Telegraph also revealed the poshest neighbourhoods in the country, five of which are in London. Read more about the newspaper’s poshest British towns here.
