Last year, as part of our Time Out City Life Index survey, we asked more than 3,000 Londoners some pressing questions about the city. One of those questions was ‘What’s the capital’s most overrated neighbourhood?’ And the people of London spoke out in their droves against one area: Shoreditch.

This bit of the East End was called ‘dirty’, ‘crowded’, ‘expensive’, ‘fake’, ‘commercialised’, ‘stale’, ‘mainstream’, ‘pretentious’, ‘overhyped’, ‘a parody of itself’ and ‘not alternative at all now’. ‘Trying to get home from there makes me feel like Matt Damon in “The Martian,”’ wrote one disillusioned reader. Sorry, Shoreditch – we still love you for a messy night out, but it seems that not everyone agrees.

Now we want to find out if last year’s results still hold true. Has Shoreditch got any cooler in the last 12 months? Has another neighbourhood overtaken it in the lame stakes? More importantly, what’s the best area in London to hang out in right now?

We’re aiming to answer these questions and many more – and we need your help. Take the Time Out Index 2019 now and fill us in on life in London today. It’s fun and anonymous, it takes about ten minutes, and when you’re done, we’ll reveal your soul city: the place that you absolutely have to visit this year, based on your survey answers. Whatever your result, chances are it’ll be cooler than Shoreditch.

Start the Time Out Index survey now and tell us all about your London.
