If you happened to be travelling on the tube yesterday, you may have run into a crowd of people stripped down to their boxers, budgy smugglers and briefs. No, it wasn’t a fever dream – they were taking part in the 12th edition of the bizarre No Trousers Tube Ride

On Sunday, January 12 hundreds of Londoners braced the freezing temps and took off their trousers to travel the London Underground, just for a bit of a laugh. Participants congregated at the Old Pagoda in Chinatown before heading underground in their trouser-less droves.

If you didn’t catch sight of the brave (some may say crazy) punters, these are some social media highlights from the No Trousers Tube Ride 2025.

What is the ‘No trousers Tube Ride’ and when did it start?

The story behind the No Trousers Tube Ride is pretty simple – it’s just funny, innit. It actually started in New York in 2002 and was the idea of local comedian Charlie Todd.

He told the BBC: ‘It’s meant to be a bit of harmless fun. Certainly we are living in a climate where, you know, people like to have culture war fights. My rule in New York was always the goal of this event is to amuse other people, to give people a laugh. It’s not to be provocative, it’s not to irritate someone. So hopefully the spirit of that continues.’

No-pants travel days then took off in cities all over the world, including Berlin, Prague, Warsaw and Toronto. London hosted its first sort-of-half-naked tube ride in 2009.
