Flatpack enthusiasts, assemble! Next spring, the Swedish retail giant Ikea is bringing reasonably priced homeware and fetching blue carrier bags to the streets of Hammersmith with a brand new outpost.
At the moment, most journeys to Ikea involve a lengthy pilgrimage to an enormous blue and yellow warehouse tucked away somewhere on the outskirts of central London. Although there are a few city-centre ‘planning stores’ dotted around London already, this new Hammersmith ‘micro-store’ will be a little different – a range of 2,000 home accessories will be on sale. Everything else can be ordered for delivery, so there's no need to lug that queen-sized mattress on to the Hammersmith & City line.
Ingka Centres – part of the Ingka Group, which owns Ikea – recently bought Hammersmith’s Kings Mall Shopping Centre, and beyond bringing this new store to the area, it plans to revamp the whole mall in the future, with offices, housing, restaurants, bars and educational spaces all on the table as potential options.
Lingonberry jam enthusiasts can get excited, too: Ikea also plans to open a new food hall in the shopping centre, stocked up with all the usual meatbally goodness. It’s all gravy!
