The coolest neighbourhood in London is being treated to a swanky, new and improved tube station. That’s right, Leyton’s Central line hub is getting a brand new, larger ticket hall and step-free access.

In the £13m makeover, two new lifts are being added to make the station fully accessible for the first time and more ticket gates will be installed to help reduce congestion and meet the expected future demand (2,000 new homes are being built in the area with a further 5,300 proposed). It’s also getting two more staircases and a new overbridge.

Work on the Central line stop will get going from February 17 and hopefully be completed by spring 2027. The station will remain open for the majority of that time but locals will have a few weekend closures to watch out for around midway through the construction schedule.

Dates for those closure haven’t been confirmed yet but TfL will announce them early enough to allow people to plan their alternative journeys.

Calvin Bailey, the MP for Leyton and Wanstead, said of the upgrade: ‘These much-needed improvement works to Leyton station are great news for local residents. Local transport provision is vital for our community, and I welcome the works that will be carried out to improve the accessibility of this station for all users.

‘This progress will make a real difference to local residents, allowing everyone to travel more independently and confidently.’
