Turning the V&A into a surreal wonderland until March 2020, Tim Walker’s ‘Wonderful Things’ exhibition is one of London’s undisputed art hot tickets. In our five-star review we praise the iconic photographer’s ability to be both whimsical and subversive, while throwing in a hefty dose of sex for good measure.

Granted, the sexy bits aren’t what Knightsbridge hotel The Franklin is focusing on with its new Walker-inspired afternoon tea – nobody wants that kind of aubergine nestled among their hors d’oeuvres. But it has taken the wide-eyed wonder of the show and tried to translate it into cake form.

Perfect pink meringues, lobster-filled black buns, macarons served in baubles and lots more almost-too-pretty-to-eat surprises are served in birdcages and spindly trees hung with pastel-coloured ribbons. There’s even a sloe gin-flavoured Wonderful Treats cocktail for if you’re feeling super fancy.

The tea costs £40 per person, but for £65 a head you can enjoy a glass of fizz and entry to the exhibition, too. A wonderful day out, by any standards.
