With the days lengthening and the shorts coming out, clearly summer is just around the corner. Which means the imminent arrival of one of London’s most-loved things. No, not tinnies in the park with your mates (although that is great). We mean the return of Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House.
This year’s line-up will have us all queuing up to spend an evening watching cinematic excellence amid the splendour of a neoclassical landmark, with everything from ‘Black Panther’ to ‘The Matrix’ getting a look-in. You’ll also find the UK premieres of two films, with one opening and the other closing the festival. Kicking things off is Pedro Almodóvar's ‘Pain and Glory’, starring Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz; signing off is ‘Inna de Yard’, a documentary about the recording of an acoustic album of reggae classics that delves into Jamaica’s rich cultural history.
There’ll also be a major addition at this year’s Film4 Summer Screen. Under-prepared visitors will no longer get numb bums on the cobblestones (although, if that’s your thing, you do you, hun) because they’ll be able to avail themselves of a beanbag or a director’s chair – for an extra £7.50 (if you want a blanket thrown in, it’s a tenner). So this summer, ditch the multiplex and get yourself down the Strand for some moviegoing magic.
