We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but if you’re planning to get out of London for Easter, you may want to re-evaluate. More specifically, anyone hoping to travel north of the city and up the west coast will need to make alternative plans. London Euston station will be shut across the whole Bank Holiday weekend.

There’ll be reduced service from Euston on Good Friday and then it will shut from Saturday, April 19 to Monday, April 21. No trains will be running between Euston and Milton Keynes Central on any of those days.

So, people hoping to get from Euston to Scotland on the West Coast Main Line have been urged to travel before the bank holiday weekend or make alternative plans. While trains will be running on Thursday, they’re likely to be much busier than normal.

Avanti said its trains travelling down to London will terminate at Milton Keynes Central with replacement buses to Bedford, where trains will take passengers to London St Pancras instead. Caledonian Sleeper services will start and terminate at London King’s Cross instead.

The disruption in down to huge £86m engineering work happening at the station, which will improvements to switches, crossings, toilets and track drainage. There’s also work going on to finalise the connection of a new rail freight interchange to the West Coast Main Line in Northampton.

Amanda Webster-Uz, Network Rail’s head of Euston station operations, said: ‘There’s a significant amount of work happening over the Easter bank holiday to improve the reliability of the railway for both passengers and freight.

‘Whilst the railway to Euston is closed, we’re also taking the opportunity to improve the station itself, which will include improving our signage and upgrading our toilet facilities for customers. We’re encouraging passengers to check their journeys in advance and, where possible, travel before or after the Easter weekend.’
