The City of London is one of the shiniest, highest rising places in town. It’s jam-packed with sparkly new skyscrapers, with a bunch of others planned for the near future

But nestled among all that newness, is the grey, decades-old Fountain House, which is actually pretty significant in the Square Miles’ skyscraper history. It was built in 1954-58 and was one of the first tall office blocks to be built in the area after the Blitz.

Now though, Fountain House stands empty, derelict and awaiting demolition. In its place, the City is getting the brand spanking new 130 Fenchurch Street.

According to recently submitted proposals from Aviva Investors, 130 Fenchurch Street will be 31 storeys with a staggered design that, at the top, will resemble a crown. There will be a green terrace at level 20 providing views over the City and a pedestrian route connecting Cullum Street to Fen Court.

Most of the floors will be used as office space but the building will have 600sqm of ground floor public space with a selection of shopping, food and drink outlets open to the public. There will also be a ‘dynamic cultural offer’ and exhibition space on the 17th floor.

Stephen Black, the director at CO—RE (the developers behind 130 Fenchurch Street), said: ‘This scheme will positively contribute to existing and planned development across the Fenchurch Street area, further enriching the public realm, opening up new green pedestrian routes, and creating visual and physical linkages to the surrounding area. We’re pleased to be bringing forward a scheme of this quality within the City that will offer world-class space to meet the needs of the Square Mile and future occupiers.’

If everything’s approved, the demolition of Fountain House will get going in 2026 and take around two years. Then, completion of 130 Fenchurch Street is pencilled in for 2030.
