The closure of Hammersmith Bridge has peeved plenty of Londoners. While the Thames crossing – also one of the oldest suspension bridges in the world – has been open to pedestrians and cyclists since 2021, it’s now been shut to drivers for a whopping six years.
Since cracks were discovered in Hammersmith Bridge in 2019, the debate over who should foot the bill for renovation has rolled on. A toll was suggested, then some thought it may never reopen at all, then earlier this year locals were warned it could stay shut for another decade.
Frustrated by the delays, now some designers have unveiled a plan to restore vehicle access to Hammersmith Bridge. Design studio Sybarite, collaborating with engineers Buro Happold, have revealed how they would fix the Grade II*-listed crossing – and the designs look pretty spectacular.
Sybarite’s plans feature two ‘elliptical ribbons’ which would surround the original crossing. Those ‘ribbons’ would be for vehicle use, while the Victorian structure would remain for pedestrians and cyclists, and Sybarite suggests that plants could be added to it. Here are some pics of the designs.

Sybarite co-founder Torquil McIntosh commented on the designs: ‘London’s bridges are powerful symbols of our city’s identity. My vision for Hammersmith Bridge is both deeply rooted in its historic legacy and boldly focused on the future - transforming it into a catalyst for wider regeneration.
As both a resident and business owner, I see firsthand the urgent need to restore this vital gateway. The time to act is now—we must invest in its revival and unlock the full potential of the surrounding area through strategic urban renewal.’
So, could these designs actually become reality? It seems unlikely. Hammersmith and Fulham Council has shot down Sybarite’s plans and dismissed them: ‘This looks like another eccentric press stunt from a company seeking publicity and we haven’t been involved.’
