This festive season has definitely already started – yes, we know it’s only the middle of November but we’ve got to get our kicks somehow – and we can’t think of a more Xmas-y place to get into the spirit of things than Covent Garden right now.
There’ll be daily flurries of (entirely sustainable) snow until December 27, with the white stuff fluttering down on the West and North Piazzas on the hour, every hour, from noon until 7pm. With the last actual white Christmas in the UK as long ago as 2010, this is pretty much the only place you’re guaranteed a real snow storm. We can confirm it's genuinely lovely, with thick flakes sticking to your hair and eyelashes. Merry, glitzy and very much on the tasteful side of schmaltz.
They’ve also popped up a whole winter forest, inspired by Disney’s ‘Frozen’. Keep your eyes and ears open for surprise appearances by choirs from Disney shows like the aforementioned ‘Frozen’, as well as ‘Mary Poppins’ and ‘The Lion King’, who will be making surprise visits to the piazza to sing their West End hearts out.
Venture into said magical woodland and you’ll find eight cosy dining bubbles known as the Ramsbury Forest Domes. Draped in snug sheepskin they've got room for six of your nearest and dearest to chow down on a Christmas sharing feast, featuring a giant platter of tender rotisserie chicken, creamed spinach, parsnips, roast potatoes and a properly massive gravy boat.
A six-person dome will set you back £180 – aka £30 per head – £300 for the VIP package – aka £50 each – and they’re open from 11.30am until 10.15pm daily, with a 90-minute dining slot in which to get stuck into your spuds etc. Ramsbury gin and voddy cocktails are just a tenner and you’ll get to sip them surrounded by glowing lights, pine cones and Christmas trees. It all feels secluded and secret, even in central London. Given the food and surrounding, this must be one of the best-value dome/igloo/pod offerings in London this Christmas.
