Nothing speaks to the heart of the lifelong city dweller like a farmers’ market. They’re like the country, but without all the terrifying locals in jogging bottoms and wellies, the impassable lanes choked with harrows and huge ominous tanks of effluvia, and the bleak village shops with their selection of past-their-sell-by-date frozen ready meals. The London farmers’ market is a civilised slice of rus in urbe, a place to discover what old Mother Nature has attached in the way of foliage to carrots and beetroots, where you can ‘pick up a few bits’ for your poshly casual dinner party and hobnob with your Rains-clad neighbours.
Now one of the best of ’em is back in business. Alexandra Palace Famers’ Market has been hors de combat for the last 17 months depriving Crouch End residents (so ‘country’ they don’t even have the tube) of access to artisanal jams and cheese presented on sacking. From yesterday (August 8), the APFM – as no one has ever referred to it – will be back on the big hill every Sunday, 10am-3pm. This is obviously GOOD NEWS.
The award-winning market (who knew they had awards for markets?) has been running at Ally Pally since 2003, dishing out top-quality local produce: fruit and veg, bread, cakes, meat, cheese, eggs, raw milk, preserves and more. There are also crafts and some hot food and coffee stalls. Plus, you can take your dog along. That’s an animal. Like in the country.
Alexandra Palace Farmers’ Market, Sundays 10am-3pm, Alexandra Palace Park or nearby Campsbourne School. Free.
