According to recent research from thinktank New London Architecture, the Big Smoke could get as many as 600 new skyscrapers over the next decade. Eleven of these towers have already been confirmed to be built in the City of London by 2030, and more are on the ever-taller horizon.
Plans have been revealed to build a new 46-storey tower block near the Gherkin in the City, with a garden on every floor and a new public park.
Property investment firm AXA IM Alts has submitted a planning application to the City of London to build a new office building at 63 St Mary Axe. These are the same people behind the tallest building in the City at 22 Bishopsgate.
Designed by Fletcher Priest Architects, the green building will have access to a garden on every floor, and 100 new trees will be planted across the 176-metre-tall tower.
AXA IM Alts said it has engaged with more than 350 local community groups and other stakeholders over the last 18 months to come up with the idea to create ‘Camomile Park’, a new public green space adjacent to Camomile Street. As well as the park, the proposed scheme includes the unveiling of a buried section of the ancient Roman wall, an auditorium, and food and drink outlets.
All of this is subject to approval from the council, which will review the application in due course. Here’s a peek at the proposed design.
