Celebrate the work and legacy of innovative and singular band Talk Talk – who split in the early ’90s – at this multifaceted event. A tribute act named The Spirit of Talk Talk Band, featuring Zero 7’s Sophie Barker on vocals plus Talk Talk collaborators, will perform songs from ‘The Colour of Spring’, the band’s third album. Early Talk Talk member Simon Brenner will also be showcasing his Angel River project, beginning the set with a reworking of his former band’s self-titled single from 1982, one of their early and biggest hits.
Other musical guests include wistful folk rockers Turin Breaks and Fyfe Dangerfield of alt indie outfit Guillemots. There’ll also be a full playback of Talk Talk’s ‘Spirit of Eden’ album from 1988 – a sprawling, thoughtful record that’s leaps and bounds away from the band’s catchier, poppier hits (the most famously of which was arty, upbeat synthpop number ‘It’s My Life’), but rightly heralded as a beautiful, important album.
Also at the night will be James Marsh, the artist who produced all of Talk Talk’s distinctive album covers. Marsh has created an animation which will be displayed at the venue. The paperback edition of ‘The Spirit of Talk Talk’ book – containing all of Marsh’s artwork, plus interviews, rare band photos and interviews with fans and acquaintances – will also be launched (the book is available to buy at spiritoftalktalk.com). All in all, a treat for both dedicated fans and those who want to find out what all the Talk Talk chatter is about.
