Formerly the head honcho of lauded, slightly cult-ish Scottish record label Fence Records, The Pictish Trail's (aka Johnny Lynch) brand of lo-fi, floaty folk baladeering – with a few electronic beats and bleeps thrown in here and there – perfectly sums up the label's musical identity and is as good an indicator as any of why so many people fell for its considerable charms. Supporting is Sweet Baboo, an unassuming Welsh troubadour with a cute brand of oddball pop. His folk-toned melodies sometimes sound like the kind of thing you might hear on a children's TV programme from the ’80s – which, in our book, can only be a good thing.
