Whether they’re creating claustrophobic Marxist post-punk or exquisite, deconstructive ’80s synthpop, Green Gartside and the various incarnations of his Scritti Politti project have been consistently fascinating since they became one of the first bands to self-release a single in 1978. The last Scritti Album ‘White Bread, Black Beer’ was full of Brian Wilson-ish harmonies, lo-fi rock, glacial pop and contemporary broken beats, so listen out for that alongside a few of their hits: ‘Absolute’, ‘The “Sweetest Girl”’, and ‘Perfect Way’, as covered by Miles Davis – all sung in Gartside’s deliciously distinctive, lavender-scented falsetto, undimmed by the years.
