The first of three concerts curated by Samling and programmed by Samling Scholar Joseph Middleton, exploring for the first time the relationship between Schubert's songs and the drawings of the eminent Austrian artist Martha Griebler. At 1.30pm, the soprano Jennifer France, mezzo-soprano Anna Stéphany, baritone Philip Smith and pianist Joseph Middleton perform a programme based on the theme of Spring. At 3pm, the soprano Sarah-Jane Brandon, mezzo soprano Kitty Whately, baritone Njabulo Madlala and pianist Joseph Middleton present songs exploring the theme of 'Night'. Then at 4.30pm, the soprano Geraldine McGreevy, mezzo soprano Clara Mouriz, baritone Benedict Nelson and pianist Joseph Middleton present Schubert's songs of death and vision of bliss beyond life.
