Sarah Joyce, renamed in honour of children's author Rumer Godden, is another in the run of retro-soul chanteuses – albeit turning more to the ’70s rather than the ’60s for her inspiration. Her elegant and emotionally complex songcraft nods to Bacharach, Carole King and Karen Carpenter, and she returns here ahead of a third album that could (like her last two) climb rapidly up the charts.
