Love causes no end of trouble in 'Partenope', Handel's witty 1730 opera. There's cross-dressing, furious jilted brides, duels - oh, and some blindingly gorgeous arias to cut through the silliness. This first revival of Christopher Alden's production has a surrealist setting inspired by Man Ray's photography.
The ENO's 'Partenope' uses Amanda Holden's translation of Silvio Stampiglia's original libretto. Sarah Tynan takes the role of the titular proud queen. Christian Curnyn conducts. Sung in English, with surtitles.
