Charismatic ex-Empirical trumpeter/composer Phelps draws as much on Louis Armstrong's rabble rousing gospel chops as he does Dave Douglas' angular modern approach in his own inventive, angular solos. He appears here with his storming 17-piece big band featuring bucolic singer Herbert and dazzling guest altoist Kinch, while Phelps kicks off the evening with a nifty quartet set.
