Alban Berg's Violin Concerto

Carolyn Widmann is soloist in Alban Berg’s heart-wrenching Violin Concerto, dedicated ‘To the memory of an angel’ (Alma Mahler/Walter Gropius’s 18-year-old daughter Manon). It is paired with another Viennese master: Schubert’s final Symphony No 9 in C (‘Great’) and ‘The Unanswered Question (Contemplation No 1)’ by American pioneer Charles Ives. The Philharmonia Orchestra is conducted by Christoph von Dohnányi.
