Robert Carson's production of Britten's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' raised more than a few eyebrows on its premiere in 2011. He takes the much-loved British composer's sensual, bewitching Shakespearean opera and sets it in the playground of a '50s boy's school, where uniformed lads run riot through its fairy adventures. But its enthusiastic reception suggests that his approach more than paid off.
'A Midsummer Night's Dream' returns to the ENO in March 2018, with a cast of appropriately young and rising stars including Christopher Ainslie, Soraya Mafi, Eleanor Dennis, Clare Presland, David Webb, and Matthew Durkan. Alexander Soddy conducts.
